Why Bother?

This is the Methodist church on 18th and Broadway in Denver. A year or so back they spent a long time and probably alot of $ restoring the exterior of the thing. Don't know what they did but they had scaffolding on it for like a year or more. The building is (I think) a historically registered type place. And some of the $ for its up-fixin came from the lotto. The question I have, is why bother? They just put billboards in front of everything anyway.
People would probably be pissed if somebody spray painted all over the thing, but a big ole orange billboard is cool?
I don't have any particular fondness for that church, I just thought if youre going to make it look like a truck stop anyway you wouldn't go out of your way to keep it so historical.
Another thing to note about this billboard is that it is an ad for the Brown Palace hotel. Which is right down the block. For one, how much advertising do you need? Also, fuck it, billboards are ugly. They are the visual equivalent of telemarketing. Furthermore, I don't patronize the Brown Palace anyway, so can I not have to have this shit shoved in my face?
I can totally imagine the people in charge of marketing Colorado putting billboards all over the top of any points of interest. You'd be driving down the mountains seeing signs for Burger King - Idaho Springs or something...
